What (Not) to Wear for a Blue-Collar Job Interview

We all know how to dress when it comes to office interviews, but what if your interview is for an industrial, blue-collar job? What do you wear then?

They say first impressions are everything, and it’s true. Even though your interview may be for a labor position, there are definite do’s and don’ts when it comes to dressing for a blue-collar job interview.

What to wear

A blue-collar job interview is less formal than a typical corporate interview. You are not required to wear a suit and tie unless you want to. However, you should always aim to overdress rather than underdress.

“Dress to impress. If you want a job, you must look the part. It shows us how serious you are about finding work. If you really want a job, do everything possible to make a good impression,” says Hoala Morrison, Personnel Manager at ALTRES Industrial.

For a majority of jobs, wearing long pants, a collared shirt, and covered shoes is what’s expected during an interview. In Hawaii, dressing for work is more casual.

“Aloha shirts are fine since it’s the universal Hawaiian attire,” says Caren Gomes, another Personnel Manager.

What not to wear

Although dressing for blue-collar interviews requires less formality, you should still use common sense and wear what’s appropriate.

Clothing that is stained, ripped, or has visible holes is an absolute don’t. Tank tops, shorts, and slippers are also inappropriate. “Either tuck in your shirt all the way or have it out all the way,” says Gomes. If you are wondering whether or not to wear something, err on the side of caution and don’t wear it.

You can always call the company and ask about their dress expectations for interviews. Don’t worry about coming across as uninformed. This just shows you want to make a good first impression and that you are serious about the position you’re interviewing for.
