We would like you to meet Industrial Division Personnel Manager, Meshay Quiogue. Meshay has been with ALTRES for over 23 years and during that time has enjoyed many successes. However, she says her greatest achievement is being able to contribute and be a part of a highly experienced and productive team. Her knowledge and expertise as a Certified Staffing Professional make her an asset not only to ALTRES but also to the clients ALTRES serves.
How did you find your way into a career in the staffing industry/with ALTRES?
Prior to joining ALTRES, I had never worked at a staffing company. I actually started as an Administrative Assistant in the Industrial division. After a few months of working part-time, they offered me a full-time position as Personnel Manager. And as they say, the rest is history!
What is your role at ALTRES? Describe a typical day on the job.
My workday starts at 6:00am. I handle countless priorities on any given day – from reviewing applications and resumes to interviewing and placing candidates on various job assignments. I also work very closely with our clients to ensure their staffing needs are met.
What qualities or skills are essential to be a successful Personnel Manager?
2020 definitely brought challenges to the workplace, and as we move forward in 2021, I think the most essential quality we all must have is empathy. People’s lives were turned upside down this last year. When they reach out to us here at ALTRES, we understand that every person’s situation is different. My job is to “learn” about each individual person and what they are looking for in their next job. Unfortunately, we can’t assist everyone and for me, that is the hardest part of my job. But whether I can help someone or not, showing empathy, compassion, and understanding in all of my interactions with both applicants and clients is the key to being AND feeling successful as a Personnel Manager.
What is the most challenging and most rewarding thing about your job?
As the Hawaii job market changes, I find it increasingly important to educate our employees about the meaning of good work ethic. Our clients are looking for the best of the best, so helping our employees understand that rewards need to be earned helps make the union successful. It is a challenge, however it’s one I find extremely rewarding, especially when we find the perfect candidates for our clients and the perfect jobs for our employees.
Name three fun facts about yourself.
I was born and raised in Guam and come from a very large family—9 girls and 2 boys! I have a fabulous family of my own that I love to spend time with. My two grandchildren are my world; if I could spend every moment of every day with them, I would! Another fun fact is that I love to travel, but I hate to fly.
