Matchmaker. That’s how Lynn Hiyane likes to think of herself. Lynn is a Certified Staffing Professional (CSP) and Placement Manager for our Technical and Office divisions. With over 15 years of experience, Lynn is dedicated to finding the perfect match for both our clients and candidates.
How did you find your way into a career in the staffing industry / with ALTRES?
When I was living in the Bay Area, the most common way of finding a job was to work with a staffing company. The first interview I had with a staffing company set me on my career path. The recruiter not only placed me in a job that I loved but more importantly helped me realize that I wanted a career in the recruiting/staffing industry. When I moved back home to Hawaii, I did some research on local staffing companies and chose ALTRES. At the time, the only in-house opening they had available was for an assistant to the Technical division. Although I was not entirely familiar with the role, I knew it was an opportunity to do what I wanted and to work with a great company, so I took my chances and was hired!
What is your role at ALTRES? Describe a typical day on the job.
I serve as Placement Manager for both the Technical and Office staffing divisions and work to fill temp-to-hire and permanent placement positions. The best way to describe a typical day on the job is to say that there is no typical day. Each day is different and involves heavy networking and recruiting. I like to think of myself as a matchmaker. It’s my mission to match two parties—the client and the candidate—and make sure both are happy. I often tell people that when I retire, I will use my matchmaking skills to find others love and marriage!
What qualities or skills are essential to be a successful Placement Manager?
A successful Placement Manager must be able to work well in the gray. It’s important to listen carefully to what clients and applicants are saying and to what they are not saying. The gray area often comes in non-verbal communication. This is crucial for a Placement Manager to pick up on in order to determine whether a placement will be beneficial or not.
What do you think is unique about the ALTRES culture?
There is a strong feeling of ohana present here at ALTRES. Both our company president and our CEO walk the halls and take an interest in each of us. I enjoy the people I work with, many of whom I consider lifelong friends. I still receive birthday cards from our CEO and even received a gift when I had my first child. It’s the little touches that let me know that I am not just a “body,” but that they truly value who I am as a person. ALTRES believes in people before profits, and I find that our company values are in line with my own.
What might someone be surprised to know about you?
Under the simple exterior, I am extremely self-competitive and motivated to do things that no one thinks can be done. In college, I took my boyfriend’s stick-shift car and taught myself how to drive. At age 22, I bought my first piece of Hawaii real estate, and at 30 I ran a marathon. I was also the first employee at ALTRES to inquire about becoming a Certified Staffing Professional (CSP). I am always seeking out my next challenge, finding ways to surpass it, and adding it to my list of personal and professional achievements.
ALTRES is proud to have experienced and driven employees like Lynn Hiyane on our team. Contact us today to get one of our experienced Placement Managers, like Lynn, working for you.
